Ranking and Certification

Chinatown JKD provides authentic training and certification to qualified practitioners in Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do. We operate under the standards and practices set forth by first-generation Bruce Lee students Bob Bremer and Jim Sewell under the direct supervision of second-generation instructor Tim Tackett. The student ranking structure of the Chinatown JKD Association is the following:

1st RANK

An important rank in Chinatown JKD. First rank signifies your commitment to the program through an investment of at least 6 months of training and being able to perform all Level 1 material.

SENIOR 1st

The first Student Trainer rank. In order for a student to receive senior rank, he or she must be able to perform all Level 1 techniques as well as teach them. Senior ranks are awarded in person only.

2nd RANK

Second rank represents proficiency in all Level 1 & 2 material. This includes the 5 ways of attack, full contact sparring, and the ability to control distance. Proficiency in supplementary material not required but is recommended.

SENIOR 2nd

This rank is a big accomplishment as a Senior 2nd can teach (for profit) all the material from both 1st and 2nd rank. In order to achieve Senior 2nd, one must be able to perform all Level 1 & 2 material as well as teach and evaluate.

3rd RANK

The third rank represents proficiency in most undergraduate techniques and training methods, as well as sparring and application.

4th RANK

The fourth rank represents technical proficiency in all techniques and training methods, as well as sparring and application. A student who has acquired this rank may apply for Apprentice Instructorship.

TESTING GUIDELINES

All Student Level evaluations through Level 4 may be completed via video or in-person. All "Senior" rank (and instructor level) evaluations must be completed IN PERSON.

The instructor ranking structure of the Chinatown JKD Association is the following:

Prior Rank vs Rank in Chinatown JKD

To get an official rank recognition with the Chinatown JKD Association, we must verify your knowledge in the Chinatown JKD curriculum, and the only way to do this is to pass each level of our curriculum.

For instance, if you have been awarded an "Apprentice Instructorship" by another JKD organization or instructor you are still required to pass the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Level qualification tests before your current rank is officially recognized and sanctioned by the Chinatown JKD Association. However, all minimum time requirements are waived should you currently hold an Instructor level certification from a recognized JKD group. To find out more please contact us.
